While many of these disputes are caused by genuine grievance, it is also far too true that some workplaces are prone to difficulties.
because they have developed a “toxic environment”. What is a toxic environment? Simple: it is a workplace where people are unhappy, and do not feel like they can talk to management about it. This is obviously something we should all be trying to avoid, so, with that in mind, here are our top five tips for keeping your staff happy and productive this summer!
1: Give workers more say in their hours
The summer months are the ones when many of us would rather be in the park, or at the beach, with our families that sitting in an office. You can make workers’ lives easier by being more flexible when the sun is out: can you support a half-day Friday? Or offer workers more flexitime? If so, you might find your staff is happier, healthier, and more productive!
2: Lead by example
No one wants to ruin a family barbeque by constantly checking work emails, and then disappearing for forty minutes to tidy up a work matter online. But how can your staff feel comfortable putting down their iPhones if you are the type of boss who sends and replies to emails at all hours? Do them (and yourself) a favour this summer: adopt a healthy work/life balance, and watch them follow suit!
3: Less fabric, more freedom
We are not used to baking sun in old Blighty – so do not be afraid to let your workers take a few layers off in the summer months. When it is sweltering hot, and people are cooped up in an office all day, give them the option to ditch the suit and tie for something a little less sweaty. Summer, after all, is shorts weather!
4: Do you need to be inside?
Connected to the last point, ask yourself this question: does my staff have to be inside all day? If people have laptops and a place to sit outside, why not let them take their work there? If you need to have a catch up with an employee, why not invite him or her for a quick stroll in the park? And if you are planning a staff meeting, could it be held outside under the sun, instead of inside under the artificial lighting?
5: A few more perks wouldn’t hurt
Do you know what is really great when you are sitting in a hot office during the summer? An ice cream truck pulling up outside. Or frozen yoghurt. Or regular frisbee breaks. Or free sunglasses. Don’t underestimate the power of summer-themed perks – often, it is the little things that make the biggest difference!
